Easy Composting (Buried in a Hole)

If you have a back yard, you can compost right in the dirt.

If you have a neglected backyard, it’s the perfect place to start composting in the ground.

You just collect kitchen scraps in a container, and dump it into a hole in the ground every few days. The container I used was a big salad dressing jar, with the top part cut off, so it didn’t have a taper, and was cylindrical.

The hole I dug was around 8 inches/15cm deep. The food scraps go in, and are covered with the dirt.

It takes a week for the food to dehydrate into the soil. After that, it’s another month or so before the disintegration is mostly complete.

With each batch of garbage, you dig a new hole. I didn’t have any order to my burying, except I tended to stick to one area a while. You can bury in old holes. I think actually helps to keep adding scraps, because it seem to improve the soil faster.

You’d be surprised at how long it takes to compost in a 5’x8′ patch of dirt. I took over a year. Partway through, I started to grow green onions in the first area that was fertilized.
